DECEMBER (1995 Jrr Tolkien Calendar).
-------------------------------------
THE SIEGE OF ANGBAND
'And afterward they laid the Siege of Angband
which lasted more than two hundred years; and
Fingolfin boasted that Morgoth could never burst
from his leaguer, though neither could they take
Angband nor recover the Silmarils. But war never
ceased utterly in all this time, for Morgoth was
secretly arming, and ever and anon would try the
strength and watchfulness of his foes.'

Illustrations to JRR Tolkien's books by John Howe.
--------------------------------------------------
This, among several, picture is painted by John Howe.
Together with Ted Nasmith, he is my favourite illustrator for the JRR Tolkien
books. John Howe is currently the far most used illustrator for covers of
Tolkien paper-backs. He is very detailed, allthough not as much as Ted
Nasmith. Some of my favourites are: "tolk-balrog", "tolk-dtower",
"tolk-gandalf" and "tolk-uruk".

The "tolk-" series is a collection of approximately 140(!) scans with motives
based on JRR Tolkien books. Most of the pictures are are based on the books
"The Hobbit" (easy reading), "Lord of The Rings" (impressive language,
complexity, consistency, plot), and "The Silmarillion" (don't start with this;
it's more a dictionary that a story.
I recommend everyone to read "Lord of The Rings". It is even better the
second time you read it. Don't be alarmed by all the names. You will
probably not read such a completely perfect book ever again!
Except for the "tolk-lee" series, most of the pictures come from Tolkien
calendars that come out every year. Actually several of the "tolk-lee" were
also in the 1993(?) calendar.
If the people at ftp.funet.fi let me I will continue to use nic as my official
distribution site. Then, the newest versions can be found at nic in

You may need to login as `pictures' instead of `anonymous'.

The "tolk-" series was scanned using a HP ScanJet IIc 24-bit 400dpi scanner.
Some of the images are very difficult to zoom because of the printing
technique in the calendars. The image tolk-cliffz.jpg was a nightmare to
make, because of Moire patterns, but I finally got a usable result.
Conclusion: The scanner truly gives very sharp images up to 400dpi and a bit
more, but the calendar picture have too low printing quality resulting in
noise (Moiret patterns).
ImageMagick (John Cristy) like display, convert and mogrify was used
for cropping and adjusting the images. I recommend using ImageMagick
("display") to view these images.
